Biometric Technology: A brief history

Digital signature API is a rising transformation in the banking business as banks shift from traditional to digital media for better efficiency and productivity. As e-signatures are fraud-less, consumers become confident with your services, including the digital wallet, as they believe their money is safe from potential financial threats.

Yet, before biometric tech reached its prominence at present, it took years of effort and dedication to develop. In this article, we will take a look back at how biometric evolve.

Biometrics technology has already existed for thousands of years yet became a field of research in the 1990s. It serves as proof of a citizen’s identity.  Also, governments and business institutions use biometrics as an excellent replacement for physical identification (ID) to give people a sense of security in acquiring services.

Semi-automated facial recognition became the first attempt in building a biometric system. It is more manual than the biometrics we had today.

The development of more sophisticated biometric capture and data extraction began in the 1969s. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) funded the fingerprint and facial recognition prototypes for law enforcement purposes.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) developed a speech group in the 1980s to study voice recognition. Such innovation happened as digital storage got prohibited. Thus, encouraging the institution to focus on creating compression and algorithm.

The study yielded the M40 algorithm capable of narrowing the human search by producing a smaller set of images used afterward by specialized human technicians to evaluate. Databases store digitalized mugshots at that time.

Since its conception in 1985, iris recognition has become popular as it uses blood vessels patterns in our eyes for authentication. In 1994, it got its patent.

Facial detection technology rose to the interest of many in 1991, opening the door for real-time recognition. However, during that time, it still has faults to tweak.

2000s to present

Governments and large corporations are the only institutions that can used biometrics before. But now, even commercial products and large-scale events can use them.
